What Are Bonded Silicon on Insulator Layers on Your Capacitors?

If you've ever wondered what the Bonded Silicon on Insulator layers on your capacitors are, then you're not alone. The insulating layer is formed by directly bonding the silicon to another substrate, and the remnants remain to form the topmost Si layer. However, the Smart Cut method, developed by French semiconductor company Soitec, involves ion implantation and controlled exfoliation. By contrast, seed methods require a homoepitaxy template and an oriented crystalline insulator.

When manufacturing the devices using the Bonded Silicon on Insulator process, two silicon wafers are bonded together, with an insulating oxide layer between the two. The top device layer is used for sensing elements, and the buried oxide layer is an excellent insulator and etch stop. The bottom handle wafer is used for sealing and supports the structure. The top device layer is used for the sensing element.

During the bonding process, the AlN-Si interface is activated to form a hydrophilic surface, which is essential for hydrophilic direct bonding. In addition to enhancing surface hydrophilicity, fluorine-based plasma treatments also improved surface roughness, nanotopography, and bondability. The fluorine species initiate hydrophilic bonding by forming hydroxides on the surface region and the opposing Si surface.

In addition to the benefits mentioned above, this technology also increases production rates and reduces cycle times, thanks to the fact that the silicon is deposited directly onto the substrate. It also eliminates the need for additional materials. This is a major advantage when compared to traditional chip fabrication, which requires the addition of materials after fabrication.
